Top Gun R/C Club held their 7th annual Ronnie Bray Memorial Fly In on June 10, the hottest day

up to that point in the flying season. Temperatures approached 100 in the shade, but the heat

didn’t slow the activities at all.

The Top Gun club had been hosting this annual Fly In for a few years, but after club member

Ronnie Bray lost his ultimate battle with cancer the event was re-named in his honor. Club

members described Ronnie as being a modeler’s modeler.

The event is a true ‘fly-what-you-brung’ meet, and all the proceeds are donated to the American

Cancer Society. The event raises a considerable amount of money each year, because all the food

and drink, raffle prizes, door prizes, and auction items are donated. All you need to do is show

up to get free hot dogs and soft drinks. Really !!

The Top Gun facility is a few short miles from Lake Hartwell in Eastern North Georgia, and the

Ronnie Bray Memorial Fly In draws pilots and families from all over the Southeast.

A major activity at the Ronnie Bray Memorial Fly In is passing out door prizes and raffle and

auction items. The volume of donated aeromodeling supplies, kits, engines, and radio

components is truly impressive. Some items were auctioned multiple times, because the winner

donated the item back to the club for a second auction.

The folks running the small white food trailer were busy all day long passing out free hot dogs,

chips, and soft drinks.

Donations were most welcome, too.

The flying activities at the Ronnie Bray Memorial Fly In are constant and varied. Almost every

sort of model aircraft was flown at one time or another, and some participants flew multiple

types, from giant aerobats to tiny electrics and everything in between.

To say that the folks at the event were serious about having fun would be an understatement of

the first order.

This pilot nicked his left thumb starting an engine earlier in the day. The injury was minor,

needing only a few stitches and bandage at the local emergency room.

Adding insult to injury, he missed seeing the full-size aerobatic flight demonstration which took

place while he was off doing the classic ‘hold still, this won’t hurt a bit’ thing.

Intent on having as much fun as possible, he returned to the Fly In and had a model back in the

air “before the lidocaine wears off” !!!
